Experience

My key pedagogical emphases are on creating a pupil lead, multi-sensory and cross-disciplinary lesson. For example I would take my students to the British Museum and walk with them discussing the various artifacts. At the end of the field trip a student would pick his favorite exhibit about which he would do internet research to write a 5 paragraph essay, a story and a poem, at age 9, for our next session. We edit the work together while working on each piece for a session or two and looking at the theory of essays, stories and poems. In mathematics and sciences I work building concepts and intuition from the ground up and focus heavily on teaching the idea behind the mathematics instead of the rapid deployments of manipulations. I firmly believe that abstract mathematics is left too late in the American school curriculum and give my students advanced and interesting problems to stimulate creativity in mathematical reasoning. I also teach elementary logic and give general logic puzzles as warm ups in mathematics. I consider confidence building and enthusiasm for learning to be key tasks for a tutor. I debate with my pupils and encourage them to correct me if they notice a mistake. Teaching is a collaborative project and while there are times when I will need to lecture on a given topic most of the lessons will be very hands-on. As a dyslexic myself, I have received training in various mnemonics and techniques for improving learning and retention for SPLD students. I am comfortable with most students from those that are falling behind to the very gifted and am enthusiastic about working with Autistic Spectrum students.
